Nestled in the heart of Penn Hills, the scenic campus setting at UPMC Seneca Place sends a warm greeting to residents and families. Neatly landscaped yards and colorful pathways lead into the spacious and brightly lit skilled nursing facility.
Seneca Place provides a variety of programs that meet the needs of people who no longer require in-hospital care, but need 24-hour skilled nursing and other personal health care services. UPMC’s established reputation for medical excellence is demonstrated every day at this 178-bed facility.
Seneca Place is part of the UPMC Seneca medical campus and conveniently located minutes away from Penn Hills, the Parkway East, and Route 22 in Monroeville. Residents have the advantage of immediate access to high quality medical services from the neighboring UPMC Seneca assisted living and independent living units.
Skilled nursing professionals at Seneca Place offer a comprehensive plan of health care services including rehabilitative services. We provide care for people with Alzheimer’s, arthritis, blood disorders, cancer, leukemia, diabetes, stroke, cardiovascular disease, and slow healing wounds. We also provide hospice support for residents with an end-of-life illness.
Registered and licensed practical nurses and certified nursing assistants — specialists in caring for the elderly — work cooperatively to enhance the quality of life and return residents to their highest level of independent functioning. Caring staff is dedicated to providing comprehensive services that address the physical, psychological, and social needs of each resident.
SERVICES
Seneca Place successfully bridges the gap between hospital and home by providing continuing care for patients who have been in the hospital for major surgery, neurological diseases, cancer, or other medical treatments.
On-site, in- and outpatient rehab therapy is an important part of the complete care program. We help residents regain or retain mobility and self-reliance. Individualized programs include restorative nursing, and physical, occupational, speech, and recreational therapies. These services help keep residents physically active and mentally alert. As a result, many residents are able to return home following a brief stay.
- A registered nurse supervisor directs nursing care during all hours. Residents may continue using their personal physician of choice, although 24-hour physician coverage is offered.
- Hospice care works in conjunction with several local home hospice agencies providing residents and family members with support services for coping with the end stages of life ending illnesses.
- Comprehensive wound care is facilitated by a registered nurse with special experience in wound care.
- Cancer treatment support is provided by experienced care givers who specialize in cancer care. They provide compassion and realistic expectations to people with all types of cancer.
- A registered, licensed dietitian monitors each resident’s nutritional status and oversees the delivery of therapeutic diets as ordered by the attending physician.
- Psychiatry services are offered to residents who need specialized professional intervention so they may remain involved with regular activities and social programs and function at their highest level.
- Discharge planning offers continuity of care, which is crucial when a resident is ready to go home or move to another facility. Our staff works to make necessary arrangements to ensure a seamless transition.

Programs
Traditional Skilled Care provided by licensed health care professionals offers skilled nursing or rehabilitation services for a defined period of time.
Intermediate Care provides around-the-clock nursing supervision and restorative care. This program enables residents to maintain the highest level of independence in a home-like setting.
Respite Care is offered as a short-term, temporary stay. When a family desires some personal time, a loved one may be admitted for respite care and Seneca Place staff will tend to their needs.
Seneca Place is dually certified by Medicare and Medicaid, accepting both private pay and most insurance plans. The facility and staff are annually surveyed by the Department of Health.
Caring for a loved one who is chronically or seriously ill can be difficult. Sometimes, in spite of all you do, 24-hour nursing care is required. UPMC Seneca Place can help you feel confident in making a decision.
Rehabilitation
“Almost Home†is a short-term rehabilitation and medical care program designed to provide rehabilitation and support services after a hospital stay in preparation for returning home. “Almost Home†residents occupy a special wing at UPMC Seneca Place.
The program begins immediately after hospital discharge, as soon as five days after undergoing surgery such as an orthopedic procedure. Upon arrival at UPMC Seneca Place, the rehabilitation or medical program starts as prescribed by the resident’s progress and the extent of services required. A short-term visit usually lasts from two to 12 weeks.
In a time of need, the 24-hour visitation policy is a valued feature.
At any time, residents and families may gather and enjoy a friendly chat in the lounge, join a reading group, watch a movie, play cards, or listen to music.

In addition to dementia activity programs, our support services include scheduled socials and activities, community-sponsored events, and educational programs.
Seneca Place is committed to providing residents a safe and secure environment. Each floor is equipped with on-site surveillance, coded doors, and an emergency evacuation plan.
Pet therapy is unique to this UPMC skilled facility. The unconditional affection and humorous antics of a furry kitten or puppy lifts the spirits of residents and staff. In addition, a resident’s family pet may visit Seneca Place during a scheduled time.
Family council, resident council, and caregiver support groups are provided through social services. The meetings provide opportunities to share information and discuss new programs and a residents' progress.
The activity director coordinates exercise programs, games, arts and crafts, sports, music, and other entertainment. Residents may partake in less physical activities, such as watching a favorite program on the big-screen TV or a visit to the computer learning center, which is equipped with internet access.
Gardening is a favorite pastime for ambulatory residents and for people in wheelchairs. Residents enjoy fresh air and using their “green thumb†as they work with potted vegetables and flowering plants in the covered patio area. Weather permitting, residents enjoy a peaceful stroll along the walking path or relaxing in the courtyard.
Residents’ spiritual needs are fulfilled with on-site pastoral counseling and interdenominational church services.
Residents may shop at the on-site gift shop or take advantage of public transportation and visit the theatre or nearby Monroeville Mall.
Residents enjoy the in-house personal care salon and barber shop, and may make use of the personal laundry service. Complete housekeeping services are appreciated by both residents and their families.
